Whether or not a loved one’s death has been expected, it is never easy to say goodbye. If their death is imminent, one of the gifts you can give your loved one is to bless them in their death and transition to eternal life/life in spirit.
Even if your loved one is not able to respond to you (i.e., if they are in a natural or induced comma), it is possible that he or she may still be able to hear you. Take your time to say your goodbyes, and offer a caring touch if you are able. You don’t have to say this prayer in the presence of your loved one, although it can be a meaningful time if you do. If you use this prayer, be sure to add personalized information about your loved one — such as the things you are grateful for about him/her.
Loving God, Thank you for “Loved One’s” life;
For the uniqueness of his/her personality, the ways in which he/she has touched us, and what he/she means to us;
The memories created, the lessons and legacy he/she leaves.
We know that, in life or death, “Loved One” belongs to You.
Hold him/her now.
Remove any distress or discomfort from his/her body;
Take away any anxiety, fear or distress from his/her heart and mind.
Fill him/her with your loving and peaceful light,
And let him/her feel safe and loved in Your hands.
Lead him/her into what You have prepared for him/her,
Receive him/her with Your loving arms.
Bless our words and touch as we pour out love onto him/her now.
Help us to love and care for one another as we grieve.
Be our comforter and guide. Amen.
